Call for bipartisan condemnation of sanctions

December 23rd 2024

The Alliance of Genocide Victim Communities (AGVC) unequivocally condemns China's recent sanctions and acts of intimidation targeting 20 individuals in Canada, including AGVC members Mehmet Tohti and Sherap Therchin, leaders of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and Canada Tibet Committee. As human rights defenders, Sherap Therchin and Mehmet Tohti exemplify a commitment to justice, compassion, and solidarity, which are essential in building a more equitable and inclusive society. The Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project and Canada Tibet Committee are committed to non-violence, speaking the truth to power and advocating for justice, representing the best of our vision for a world where human dignity is respected and protected.

The CCP’s actions against these defenders are yet another example of foreign interference in Canada, part of a long pattern outlined in the recent public inquiry. As individuals and organizations dedicated to defending human rights, we urge the international community to unite and condemn these acts of intimidation.

Alliance of Genocide Victim Communities calls for bipartisan condemnation of the targeting of human rights defenders and urges Canadian politicians from all parties to send a clear message that acts of intimidation and silencing will not be tolerated.

AGVC facilitator Joanne Hodges emphasized the need to safeguard the work of human rights defenders ‘It is imperative that human rights defenders are supported with the necessary resources and protection to continue their work. Their voices play a vitally important role in holding governments and corporations accountable, ensuring that human rights are upheld and human dignity is respected.”
